Does Cloud Computing Hold Water? (Part II)
In our previous ZapFlash, ZapThink Managing Partner Jason Bloomberg explored the recent upswing in interest in Cloud Computing and evaluated its merits vis-à-vis Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). In that ZapFlash, Jason concluded that cloud computing is an ill-defined term that has turned into a bandwagon that vendors, consultants, and end-users alike are jumping on without asking first where they are going. He also complained that there is a broad chasm between the sort of public clouds espoused by organizations like Amazon and the internal do-it-yourself clouds that large vendors would like you to sink your time and money into. But, his biggest bugaboo was that too many well-intentioned individuals and organizations are jumping without doing architecture of any sort, let alone SOA. Lack of an architecture perspective, preferably a Service-oriented one, is sure to doom any cloud computing effort just as much as it has doomed Web Services on…

Goodbye 2008… Here we Come, 2009!
It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone, but with so much happening in 2008: global recession and economic stress, presidential elections, warfare and terrorism, natural disasters, and other happenings both good and bad, perhaps it’s good to shut the door quickly on this year and open up a new, more hopeful one. After all, it is at times of strife that sometimes the greatest successes emerge. And this is what we are hoping for in 2009: not just for the world at large, but for companies that adopt and implement the tenets of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). In this ZapFlash, as is our usual practice, we’ll take a look at some of the predictions we made for this year and see how they panned out, and make some new ones. We’ll scold ourselves for predictions that missed the mark, and of course, give ourselves kudos for the…

ZapTake: The Inadequacy of Microsoft's SOA Message
Today, ZapThink sat on a briefing on Microsoft’s SOA messaging, and we’re astounded by the inadequacy, inaccuracy, and tone deafness on their SOA message. Bottom-line: the official message coming from Microsoft about SOA is that SOA is just Web Services-based integration. What is particularly disappointing is that Microsoft has coined their own definition of the term “SOA” in defiance of what is increasingly becoming accepted as the understanding that SOA is an aspect of Enterprise Architecture, not a technology focused on standards-based integration.[hide -2]Download File[/hide][hide +1]Purchase: $299[/hide]…

SOA Glossary
As a reference for our subscribers and advisory clients, ZapThink has assembled this glossary of terms related to Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). ZapThink defines and uses these terms in its research, advisory practice, as well as in its Licensed ZapThink Architect (LZA) curriculum. This list is not meant to be fully comprehensive. Rather, these are terms represent key concepts that ZapThink has a particular take on. If a term does not appear on this list, ZapThink is happy to point clients to broadly available definition of the term. The terms included here fall into these categories: terminology related to Services, architecture, infrastructure, governance, and process.

WOA is Me – Another Acronym? WOA and SOA
The problem with IT: Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Just when one concept is finally understood and gaining traction, the pundits, marketers, and industry standards-bearers come up with a new and confusing phrase to confound us all. In this iteration of IT’s fascination with new TLAs (three-letter acronyms for the acronym-challenged), bloggers and hypesters galore are talking up the concept of Web Oriented Architecture (WOA). Given ZapThink’s distaste for old wine in new bottles, we have to ask: is there anything new in the WOA concept? And if there are new ideas, do they have any substance? More importantly, if there are indeed new ideas in the WOA concept, how do these compare and contrast to the SOA concept? What is WOA? At the time of writing this ZapFlash, there’s no Wikipedia entry page on Web Oriented Architecture, which is both a sign that there isn’t sufficient interest to create…

Forensic SOA
One surprising but intriguing sign that Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is finally entering the mainstream is the increasing number of lawsuits over the perceived failure of SOA implementations. Here’s the scenario: enterprise hires large consulting firm to implement SOA. Large consulting firm uses their small handful of SOA experts to sell the deal, but brings in the large team of wet-behind-the-ear college grads to do the design as well as the implementation. Enterprise is unhappy with the result, and sues consulting firm, claiming they paid for SOA, but didn’t get it. The reason ZapThink is tuned into this trend is actually quite fascinating: needless to say, the lawyers for the plaintiffs need someone who can step in as expert witnesses and say definitively what SOA is, and more importantly, what it is not. And where better to turn than ZapThink? Believe it or not, this is a growing part of…
